My name is Olivier Raulin, I am years old
and I am a freelance systems engineer, specialized in free software and Linux.
I became freelance during the year 2020, after 6 years working as a systems and network engineer.
So far, I can account for more than 10 years of professional experience in the field.
If we had to use a term to define what I do using hype-driven words,
I could define myself as something like "DevSecOps", in the sense where I have skills
in software development, in computer security as well as Ops, of course, which designates the systems administrators/engineers family.
I am not, however, a big fan of "hype" concepts generally, and the term "DevSecOps" is often vague or with blurry outlines.
In a concrete way, I architecture, design, put together and maintains technical infrastuctures composed in majority of Linux servers (and the vast majority of time based on free software),
but my activity and skills are not solely limited to this.
Hobbies
Since my teenage years, I have been fond of technology in general, and I still keep a sharp curiosity about the field,
in which computer science is obviously a big part.
From year to year, I have tested and explored multiple Linux distributions,
before sticking now mainly to Debian
thanks to its stability and the values it brings with:
I have been using it on my different machines, with few exceptions, for now more than 15 years.
Some things that I like doing will include board games (with a particular preference for strategy games), photography, movies, TV series, economy,
philosophy, sociology, video games and much more :-)
My values
There are a few things I particularly like in my day-to-day relationships:
Honesty
Transparency
Quality & High standards
Those values are a requirement, particularly in my professional relations.
I have high standards towards myself in the work I do,
and I expect as much in the relationship with my clients and professional partners.
Location
I am living in France, in the nice department of Sarthe, which is about 1 hour away from Paris by train.
I am available to work remotely for any location in the world, and I can move occasionally to Paris (once par week).

My preferred mean of communication is email, for multiple reasons:
I will read you when I have time, and will avoid being disturbed in the middle of something else.
You will read my answer when you have time, and I will not disturb you in the middle of something else.
I will be able to refer to past conversations if required,
and I will have a easy history accessible to remind myself of everything related to your business needs.
We will have both more time to think and I will be able to offer more precise thoughts.
We will both have written marks of our discussions, and we will be able to get back to it when required.
We will avoid the necessary reports after each call.
If needed, we can still talk face-to-face using video or the phone :)
As such, it is mandatory that our communication is constructive,
and we must avoid at all costs things like "URGENT", or "CALL ME ASAP",
as I will not react well to this kind of things.
As an example, if you have a project, and would like to know if its technicalities can match my skillset,
please detail it the more precisely possible in your first email, feel free to include mockups or diagrams.
This detailed email will have multiple benefits: it could allow you to see something you did not before,
while writing it down in an email to an outsider, and it will allow me to have a precise vision of your needs.
If your background is not technical, explain it in your words, focusing on what you have now and what you want to achieve, the solutions are up to me to offer!
Example: you want a website for your company.
A bad email would be "How much would cost a website for my company?", because there is no universal answer to this question.
Websites can range from a few hours of work to full weeks, depending on services it will offer.
A better email would describe your company, the services you offer, and would explain precisely what you want on your website, with linked examples of something that exists.
It would include constraints, examples, a maximum budget, and some availabilities for a meeting to discuss it further.
Please note that as much as I can do websites, this is definitely not me speciality and other people will be more suited for this task than me.
